“Right,” Michael said, squirting red sauce over his fries. “The plan for the next few days is to locate the rest of the angels: Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, Chamuel, and Jeremial. Strength in numbers and all that crap. Lucifer’s power is growing, and we need to build our arsenal to challenge him.”

That sounded like a reasonable plan, and it fit in with the orders I was given from the Most High. I admired that Michael seemed to have his head on straight and was a forward planner.

“We need the other Archangels to convene together,” Michael added, “and strategize a way to lure Luc and capture him, then take him back to Heaven or kill him.”

“I vote kill him,” Zak said, biting down hard on a fry.

“Mercy is a fine virtue, brother,” I reminded him.

“Fuck that shit!” He laughed and stuffed his face with another bite.

Michael and I glanced at each other.

“Try a few fries in your burger, Jojo,” Zak suggested.

“What?”

“Go on.” He gestured with one in his fingers. “It’s delicious.”

How he went from murder to food in a matter of seconds rattled me. Did he not care for our brother’s life? Our brother’s pain? Wasn’t that the reason for his rebellion?

But since the burger was incredible, I tried his recommendation and didn’t regret it.

“Good, isn’t it?” he said through a mouthful of food.

I nodded.

“Can we focus?” Michael asked with an impatient streak in his voice.

“How do we lure him, Mikey?” Zak asked, taking a munch of his burger.

Mike played with his food, dipping a fry in the sauce repeatedly. “We could all summon him.”

“Nah,” Zak said. “Luc is a cowardly prick. He won’t show up to a fight where he’s outnumbered.”

Mike nodded and dropped the fry on his burger wrapper. “That’s why I’ve decided we need to use someone as bait.”

Zak sat up fast. “No way. You’re not using Jojo.”

Queasiness settled in my stomach, and I put my food down. Why did Zak immediately assume that?

I turned to face Mike. “You want to use me?”

“I’ve been hunting him for twenty years,” he said, his voice low and urgent. “And Luc is the master of deception, of evading me, keeping me busy with distractions like saving humans. I’m tired of all the running around. He’s fucking with us.”

I cringed, unable to get used to the harshness of the word and its effect on me.

“Yesterday he tried to steal your grace, Jojo,” Michael added. “But that serves to reverse his darkness. I don’t get it.”

He stood, running a hand through his hair and pacing the room.

“Gabriel said when Luc killed Azreal he stole his grace, too,” Michael said, peering out the curtain. “What’s he up to?”

Good question. Grace was something sacred to each angel. Taking another’s was like absorbing their personality and power. If the darkness made Lucifer strong, then assimilating another angel’s grace nullified his strength. A lance of pain struck my chest where my brother had tried to take mine, and I rubbed the spot.

Was this why the Most High had
